Multimodal Creativity in Speech and Gesture Production

Workshop des SFB 1646

02.12.2025
09:00 - 14:00
Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung (ZiF)

The workshop is organized by CRC 1646 Project C02. Its broad topic is how humans employ speech and gesture creatively in communicative challenging situations, e.g., when conventionalized or commonly used communicative resources are insufficient. The workshop will address empirical, conceptual as well as computational modelling challenges surrounding this question.

Invited Speakers:

  • James Trujillo (University of Amsterdam)
  • Angela Grimminger (Paderborn University)
  • Andy Lücking (Goethe University Frankfurt)
  • Jiahao Yang (University of Bath)
  • Anna Palmann (University of Amsterdam)
  • Lisa Gottschalk & Alon Fishman (C02)
  • Lotta Heidemann (C03)
  • Luyao Wang (C04)

The Project C02 examines multimodal creativity in speech–gesture production and targets the underlying processes by investigating how creativity in language is enabled or constrained by being combined with the gestural modality and how this interplay is further conditioned by communicative or cognitive demands. The project members will identify patterns of multimodal creativity by combining behavioural experiments with psycholinguistic and computational AI modelling. The ultimate goal is to develop a cognitive-computational model that accounts for general mechanisms and processes of multimodal creativity.
