Maurice Stierl, Osnabrück / Martina Tazzioli, Bologna: Undoing the Decolonial Redux, Multiplying (Post-)Colonial Legacies

ZiF Border Talk Series

11.01.2024
18:15 - 19:30
Online via Zoom

Online Lecture in context of the ZiF research group „Internalizing Borders: The Social and Normative Consequences of the European Border Regime„.

The recent ‘postcolonial turn’ in Migration Studies has prompted discussions concerning the possibility of decolonising this field of scholarship. Clearly, colonial histories shape our understanding of contemporary migrations and colonial legacies are inscribed in the unequal and racialized governing of global migrations and mobilities today. We believe that it is of central importance to overcome the disjuncture between the study of contemporary migration and postcolonial formations, histories, and legacies by taking seriously the latter for understanding the former. At the same time, and as we want to outline in our talk, we want to point to a problematic ‘decolonial redux’ – linear narratives that over-emphasize colonial continuities without sufficiently acknowledging the divergences, ambiguities, and shifting rationales underlying contemporary processes of subjection and subjectivation around migration.
