Embodied Methods: Revisiting archives and ethnography to understand gendered lived experiences

14.01.2026 - 15.01.2026
00:00 - 23:59
Universität Bielefeld

Call for Participation (Deadline: 1.12.2025):  We are pleased to announce a two-day workshop for doctoral researchers exploring innovative approaches to archival research and ethnography through decolonial, critical, and affective perspectives. In this workshop, we aim to foster academic discussion and practice-oriented learning on how to critically rethink traditional methods rooted in the Western canon. The workshop will take place on Wednesday, 14 January 2026, and Thursday, 15 January 2026, from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM at Bielefeld University, co-organized by BGHS, Research Training Group „Gender as Experience“ of IZG (Financing: DFG), and CIAS.

We invite doctoral researchers to apply either as Participants (engaging in workshop activities and discussions without presenting their own work) or as Presenters (sharing research in a short presentation and, if possible, bringing materials such as field notes, archival documents, or transcripts for collective reflection). Priority will be given to doctoral researchers from Bielefeld University; however, applications from students enrolled at other German universities are also welcome. The workshop will begin with an open roundtable for the general public, followed by three practical labs, each facilitated by our invited professors:

  • Dr. Paulina Ultreras Villagrana (CIESAS Occidente & Universidad de Guadalajara)
  • Prof. Dr. Jennie Gamlin (University College London)
  • Prof. Dr. Francis Seeck (Technische Hochschule Nürnberg)

The labs will focus on: Archival Work, Critical Ethnography, and Affective Ethnography, providing participants with hands-on experience and opportunities for discussion and feedback. All attendees are expected to participate in all sessions.
