Wissenschaft benötigt vielfältige Perspektiven. Forscherinnen und Forscher aus afrikanischen Ländern sind in der internationalen Scientific Community aber nach wie vor unterrepräsentiert. Um die Vielfalt der Perspektiven in den ZiF-Forschungsgruppen zu erhöhen und um afrikanische Forscherinnen und Forscher in der Wissenschaft sichtbarer zu machen, schreibt das Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung (ZiF) ab sofort pro Jahr zwei Stipendien für Forschende aus Afrika aus: die Norbert-Elias-Fellowships.
Erfolgreiche Bewerberinnen und Bewerber werden für bis zu zehn Monate Fellows der aktuellen ZiF-Forschungsgruppe, und leben und arbeiten in dieser Zeit am ZiF. Bewerben können sich afrikanische Forscherinnen und Forscher aller Disziplinen, Senior Researchers und Postdocs, deren Arbeit in den Kontext der Forschungsgruppe passt. Bis Ende Februar 2020 läuft die Bewerbungsphase für die Norbert-Elias-Fellowships für die ZiF-Forschungsgruppe „Weltweite Anfechtungen von Frauen- und Geschlechterrechten“ unter der Leitung von Professorin Dr. Alexandra Scheele, Professorin Dr. Julia Roth und Professorin Dr. Heidemarie Winkel, die von Oktober 2020 bis Juli 2021 am ZiF arbeiten wird.
Die Norbert-Elias-Fellowships werden von der VolkswagenSiftung gefördert.

Der Soziologe, Philosoph und Dichter Norbert Elias, Schöpfer der „Theorie vom Zivilisationsprozess“, arbeitete als Permanent Fellow von 1978 bis 1984 am ZiF. Der nach seiner Flucht vor den Nationalsozialisten vor allem in England und später in den Niederlanden arbeitende Forscher erhielt seine erste Professur 1962 an der Universität Accra in Ghana.
New funding format at ZiF
Science needs diverse perspectives. However, researchers from African countries are still underrepresented in the international scientific community. In order to increase the diversity of perspectives in the ZiF research groups and to make African researchers more visible, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) is now offering two scholarships per year for researchers from Africa: the Norbert Elias Fellowships.
Successful applicants will become fellows of the current ZiF research group for up to ten months, during which they will live and work at the ZiF. Applications are welcome from senior researchers and postdocs from African universities from all disciplines whose research and publications are closely linked to the research group’s topic. Deadline for applications for the Norbert Elias Fellowships for the ZiF research group „Global Contestations of Women’s and Gender Rights“, convened by Professor Dr. Alexandra Scheele, Professor Dr. Julia Roth and Professor Dr. Heidemarie Winkel, is 28 February 2020. The research group will be working at ZiF from October 2020 to July 2021.

Sociologist, philosopher and poet Norbert Elias (1897-1990) developed the theory of the ‘Civilization Process’ and worked at the ZiF as a permanent fellow for six years. Elias, who had to emigrate to England in 1933 and was later working in the Nether-lands, held his first chair at Accra University in Ghana.
