Measuring and Managing Uncertainty

Text: Bielefeld University

The international workshop series “Quantifying and Managing Uncertainty (QUAMU)” will bring researchers from mathematics, economics, computer science, psychology, and sports science to the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at Bielefeld University in March to develop new methods for measuring and managing uncertainty.

How do people, companies, or artificial intelligence make decisions under uncertainty? How can this uncertainty be measured more accurately, and how can responsible decisions still be made? These questions lie at the heart of the international workshop series “Quantifying and Managing Uncertainty (QUAMU),” which will take place from March 2 to 13, 2026, at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at Bielefeld University.

The two-week event brings together leading researchers from insurance and financial mathematics, economics, statistics, computer science, psychology, and sports science. The aim is to develop new methods for measuring, understanding, and managing uncertainty—an issue that is becoming increasingly important in many areas of society.

The program includes expert lectures, panel discussions, and collaborative research groups addressing current topics related to uncertainty. These include, among others:

• Insurance and health economics, for example decision-making under unclear risks
• Machine learning and data science, particularly methods for quantifying uncertainty
• Financial and climate risks, such as scenarios for the long-term impacts of climate change
• Social and political dynamics, including the role of reputation or information in cooperation
• Sports economics, for example the analysis of uncertainty in football leagues and betting markets

In addition to the scientific program, the series provides space for intensive collaboration in smaller research groups as well as for exchange formats and team-building activities.

The workshop is part of the focus group “Quantifying and Managing Uncertainty,” which will be working at ZiF in March. One of the group’s aims is to establish new interdisciplinary research pathways for the further development of Bielefeld’s QUAMU research focus.
