Bielefeld doctoral student competes in FameLab world final

Author: Evangelisches Klinikum Bethel

Fingers crossed for Julian Neugebauer on Friday. He is competing in the world final of FameLab, the championship in explaining scientific questions in an understandable way. The 27-year-old is a doctoral student and research assistant at the Osthushenrich Centre for Research on Giftedness at Bielefeld University. In June, he was the first person from Bielefeld to make it through to the German final. Now he is competing against talented researchers from all over the world.

No need to beat about the bush. Don’t use incomprehensible technical jargon. And get to the point in three minutes. That is the challenge at “FameLab”. Now the world champion is being sought. Who can explain a scientific topic best? Julian Neugebauer, who also works as a doctor at the University Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at Bethel Protestant Hospitalis investigating the question of whether and how stress can be heard and measured in the voice. His research could lead to the development of preventative measures for patients. He will be competing against researchers from Australia, the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, South Africa, Switzerland and the UK – streamed live from the Knowledge Workshop to the rest of the world.

“I’m looking forward to representing Bielefeld and Bethel,” says Neugebauer, whose excitement is slowly but surely building. “I enjoy practising with my family. My aim has always been for my grandparents, for example, to understand what I’m explaining, then it’s good communication.” And Neugebauer believes that a little stage fright is not a bad thing for a performance.
