Bielefeld University signs joint declaration

Text: Bielefeld University

Bielefeld University has now signed a Joint Declaration in favour of gender equality in European higher education, research and innovation. Together with the 15 other European universities and scientific institutions that have so far been awarded by the European Union as Gender Equality Champions, the University is committed to further advancing this topic.

The institutions from Ireland, Spain, Poland, France, Sweden, Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovenia want to share best practices and take concrete steps to promote equality. “We are looking forward to exchanging ideas and gaining inspiration,” explains Dr Uschi Baaken, Gender Equality Officer at Bielefeld University.

The declaration states: “Attracting more women to academic careers and ensuring the highest standards of research quality are essential to enhancing science’s role in addressing societal and economic challenges. To achieve this, it is vital that we continue to mainstream gender equality in European and international cooperation.”
In February, the EU honoured Bielefeld University as a Sustainable Gender Equality Champion in Brussels. This award recognises the university’s decades of continuous efforts to improve gender parity and develop innovative strategies in this area. Bielefeld University is the first German university to be honoured with this award.
