Narratives in/of Criminology

Workshop am ZiF

20.03.2025 - 21.03.2025
09:45 - 17:00
Zentrum für interdisziplinäre Forschung (ZiF)

Convenor: Holger Schmidt (Siegen)

Narratives are a fundamental part of how society deals with crime. When something is interpreted and reacted to as ‚criminal‘, stories are told and this meaningful and preferably convincing representations of the course of events are established. Narratives are not ‚truthful‘ representations of social reality. Rather, they take on a constitutive role in the (linguistic) establishment of a reality of crime that is both controversial and fragile. Whether we are talking about police interrogations, courtroom confrontations or pedagogical processing: In each case, specific processes of the event are described, responsibilities are described and assigned, justifications are sought and alternative interpretations are evaluated.

Despite this crossthematic and cross-disciplinary topicality and relevance of narrative approaches, the corresponding criminological research and theoretical discourse have so far taken place predominantly in the English-speaking world. The workshop takes this as an opportunity to address crime and punishment as well as the study of these topics as narrative events in an interdisciplinary manner, to promote international networking and to establish a new branch of research within the German research community in the long term.
