The conference Chemical Connections attempts to studying inter- and transdisciplinarity through the history of one of the crucial scientific disciplines of modernity: chemistry. Already a brief look at the semantics of chemistry unveils its high connectedness. Is it a scientific discipline? An industry? A hazard? A personal relation? The development of modern chemistry clearly shows the interconnectedness of scientific, industrial, environmental and social phenomena and processes. The case of chemistry should, arguably, shed light on the societal impact of modern science at large. During this conference, we want to engage the multiple layers of chemistry’s meaning through studying its history, when seen through a multi-dimensional maze of approaches, topics, and experiences. On the one hand, we want to gauge the state of the art of the history of chemistry, and employ it to establish novel ways of studying the history of science and technology in general. On the other hand, we wish to path new ways to elucidate the causes and effects of inter- and transdisciplinary ventures in the modern world. Against this background, the proposed workshop assembles 32 authors (incl. the organizers) from around the world to jointly pen The Oxford Handbook on the History of Modern Chemistry.
