SUMMARY:Hans-Jörg Schmid (LMU München): What is creative to whom and why? Creativity in word-formation and phraseology against the backdrop of shared conventions and individual routines
DESCRIPTION:This is a conceptual and programmatic talk aiming to contribute to grasping the nature of creativity in word-formation and phraseology. Creativity is often defined as balancing out originality and effectiveness. I interpret originality as degrees of deviation from convention and effectiveness as degrees of successful mutual understanding. Patterns in word-formation and phraseology provide speakers with the resources needed for being lexically creative when coining new words or expressions. The challenge for exploring creativity in the domains of word-formation and phraseology is that the schemas and templates that are available in these domains offer considerable scope for regular creativity (i.e. productivity)\, but also for daring deviations from existing conventions. \nI resolve this tension by relying on Sampson’s (2006) distinction between F-creativity and E-creativity and my own Entrenchment-and-Conventionalization Model. I discuss systematic ways in which speakers exploit word-formation and phraseology for acts of linguistic creativity which are salient to different degrees and can be creative vis-à-vis different dimensions of regularity. Essentially\, they can pertain to the symbolic dimension of regularity and affect form-meaning pairings\, the syntagmatic dimension\, affecting combinatorial regularities\, and/or the socio-pragmatic dimension\, affecting functional\, situational and social regularities. The role of factors widening or limiting the scope for creativity\, among them individual cognitive routines\, is also discussed and included in the proposed definition of linguistic creativity. \nHans-Jörg Schmid ist seit 2005 Professor für Moderne Englische Sprachwissenschaft an der Ludwig-Maximilian-Universität München. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in der kognitiven Linguistik\, lexikalischen Semantik\, Wortbildung\, Korpuslinguistik\, Pragmatik und Sprachtheorie. DESCRIPTION:In dem erfolgreichen Format der Bielefelder Wissenswerkstadt „Brainstrom“ geben zwei Forschende der Universität Bielefeld Einblicke in ihre Arbeit und liefern zugleich Stoff für spontane Szenen\, Songs und Gedichte. Sie werden von den moderierenden Impro-Profis Nele Kießling und Marvin Meinold („Die Stereotypen“) dargeboten und vom Musiker Jannis Kaffka begleitet. \nAuf der Bühne steht in dieser Ausgabe die Bielefelder Linguistik in Person von Ina Pick\, Professorin für Sprache und Kommunikation und Ralf Vogel\, Professor für Germanistische Linguistik und geschäftsführender Sprecher des Sonderforschungsbereichs „Sprachliche Kreativität in der Kommunikation“. Ihre Forschungen bieten ausreichenden Stoff zu kritischen Nachfragen und improvisierten Spielszenen. So befasst sich Ina Pick damit\, wie Menschen Gespräche führen und wovon ihr Gelingen abhängt\, während sich Ralf Vogel u.a. für Lücken und Konflikte in der Grammatik interessiert\, die von uns oft unbemerkt\, aber meistens erstaunlich sprachlich kreativ gemeistert werden. \nAuf Zuruf aus den Gesprächen mit den Forschenden wechseln die „Stereotypen“ dabei in spontane Show-Einlagen. Aufhänger können kuriose Situationen aus dem Forschungsalltag sein\, witzige Erkenntnisse oder schräger Fachjargon. SUMMARY:Rasha Abdel Rahman (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin): The many facets of meaning processing during language production
DESCRIPTION:Abstract des Vortrags: \nSpeaking is a highly flexible and adaptive means of expressing thoughts\, sensations and experiences in diverse communicative contexts\, but this potentially wide range of meaning processing has not been thoroughly investigated. In this talk\, I will present studies on how different aspects of meaning affect lexical activation and the words we choose when we plan to speak. Beyond different types of semantic contents\, I will focus on how we communicate sensorimotor experiences and social-emotional content\, as well as how speaking is shaped by different communicative contexts. Together\, these studies reveal a complex interplay between lexical selection and social settings that characterizes the language production system as highly flexible and adaptive. \nRasha Abdel Rahman ist Heisenberg Professorin für Neurokognitive Psychologie am Institut für Psychologie der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und leitet dort den gleichnamigen Arbeitsbereich sowie das Laboratory for Neurocognitive Psychology. SUMMARY:Rafał Jończyk (Adam Mickiewicz Universität Poznań): How thinking in another language modulates creativity and brain dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Creativity is widely regarded as a key cognitive resource in the 21st century\, yet it remains a complex and elusive phenomenon. Language constitutes a central medium of creative thought and expression—for example\, through the production and comprehension of novel metaphors. At the same time\, a growing body of research suggests that operating in more than one language may shape creative cognition. In an increasingly multilingual world\, this raises important questions about how bilinguals’ creative performance depends on the language in use and the contexts in which creativity unfolds. \nIn this talk\, I focus on the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying creative cognition and examine how creative performance is modulated by language of operation\, prior knowledge\, and feedback. I will present a series of electrophysiological (EEG) studies addressing two main questions: (1) how domain-specific knowledge and knowledge of an additional language influence the neural dynamics of novel metaphor comprehension\, and (2) whether engaging in creative idea generation in one’s native versus a foreign language alters creative potential\, and which neural mechanisms support such effects. Together\, these findings illuminate how bilingualism interacts with creativity at the level of brain dynamics\, offering new insights into the cognitive and neural foundations of creative language use and highlighting promising directions for future research. \nRafał Jończyk ist Assistant Professor an der Faculty of English der Adam Mickiewicz Universität Poznań. SUMMARY:Stefan Hartmann (HHU Düsseldorf): Constructions on the verge of a creative breakdown. What constructional idioms reveal about linguistic creativity and productivity
DESCRIPTION:Linguistic creativity has become one of the most prominent topics in Construction Grammar. Taking up Sampson’s now well-established distinction between F(ixed)-creativity and E(xtending)-creativity\, constructionist approaches are concerned with both types of creativity\, which can potentially both play a significant role in accounting for what Goldberg has called the puzzle of partial productivity\, i.e. the phenomenon that linguistic constructions usually extend within fairly well-defined (albeit not always easily definable) limits. Creativity can also account for phenomena of constructionalization and constructional change. Despite the surge in research\, there are still numerous open questions – for instance\, how creativity relates to productivity\, and what the relationship may be between linguistic creativity on the one hand and „extravagance“ on the other\, a concept orignally developed by Haspelmath (based on Rudi Keller’s maxims of language use) to account for the unidirectionality of grammaticalization but recently taken up in diachronic Construction Grammar as a potential explanation for all kinds of linguistic changes. In this talk\, I will discuss to what extent so-called snowclones can shed light on some of those open questions. Snowclones are „extravagant“ formulaic patterns with a(n alleged) fixed source\, e.g. [the mother of all X] or [X on the verge of a nervous breakdown]. As patterns with a fixed part and one or more open slot(s) that are often characterized by a rich background in popular culture and tied to specific contexts\, they are particularly interesting from a constructionist point of view as they give insights into the way constructional productivity interacts with social and cultural contexts\, which in turn can give valuable insights regarding the respect roles of E- and F-creativity in the emergence and spread of linguistic patterns across individuals and communities. \nStefan Hartmann ist Professor für Germanistische Sprachwissenschaft an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. Im Mittelpunkt seiner Arbeit steht die Dynamik von Sprache in all ihren Facetten – vom frühkindlichen Spracherwerb über Sprachvariation und Sprachwandel bis zu der Frage\, wie die menschliche Sprachfähigkeit evolutionär entstanden ist. Seine Forschungsinteressen liegen im Bereich der historischen Linguistik\, Korpuslinguistik\, kognitiven Linguistik\, Konstruktionsgrammatik und beziehen sich dabei u.a. auf morphologische und grammatische Phänomene in den germanischen Sprachen.

DESCRIPTION:Wenn Fragen nur indirekt beantwortet werden. Kreative Antwortstrategien im politischen Alltag \n„Die Politiker reden immer nur drum herum und antworten nicht auf unsere Fragen!“ Diesem verbreiteten Urteil gehen wir auf den Grund. Welche Arten zu fragen gibt es eigentlich und was bedeutet es\, darauf zu antworten? Auch wir geraten in Gesprächen manchmal in Situationen\, in denen wir nicht antworten können oder wollen. An diesem Abend befassen uns mit unterschiedlichen Antwortstrategien und tauschen uns darüber aus\, ab wann indirektes Antworten unhöflich wird. \nDie Veranstaltung wird von Forschenden des Projekts B03 durchgeführt und wurde gemeinsam mit dem Projekt Ö des SFB 1646 entwickelt. Die Anmeldung erfolgt über das Portal der VHS. \nZur Veranstaltungsreihe: \nDie Forschenden des SFB 1646 untersuchen wie sprachliche Kreativität in der Alltagskommunikation eingesetzt wird\, um sich in einer ständig verändernden Welt zu orientieren. Mit ihrer Veranstaltungsreihe in der Volkshochschule Bielefeld\, die in diesem Semester in die zweite Runde geht\, möchten die Projekte wiederum in direkten Austausch mit allen treten\, die sich für den kreativen Umgang mit Sprache interessieren. Neben kurzen Impulsen aus der Forschung\, Fragerunden und offenen Diskussionen wird es auch verschiedene Möglichkeiten zum Mitforschen geben. Dabei wird schnell klar\, dass Jede und Jeder Expert*in für sprachliche Kreativität ist.

SUMMARY:Muriel Norde (HU Berlin): When creativity becomes routine\, and vice versa
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nIt is a well-known paradox in current theorising about creativity that successful creative forms may at some point become routine and are consequently no longer perceived of as creative (Fleissner 2025). In order to solve this puzzle\, we need a model of creativity that encompasses both the creation of new forms and the establishment of new schemas (as generalisations over these new forms). In this talk\, I propose a model of creativity in word formation that expands on Sampson’s (2016) distinction between F(ixed)- and E(nlarged)-creavity. Trousdale & Norde (2025) argue that there are two kinds of F-creativity: F1\, for regular and productive word formation (e.g. English [X-ness])\, and F2-creativity\, which refers to a mismatch with F1-creative forms\, e.g. thugcracy. This word is similar to neoclassical compounds (democracy\, theocracy) but only partially so\, because it has a non-classical base (thug). Once several of such F2-creative forms emerge\, speakers may establish a generalisation across these forms: [X-cracy]. In the proposed model\, E-creativity is the process that results in this new schema\, but the [X-cracy] forms themselves are now F1-creative. E-creativity is thus a crucial link between F2- and F1-creativity\, as it accounts for the transition from creativity to routine. To illustrate this typology of creativity and how it can be operationalised\, I present data from two case studies: pseudoparticiples in Dutch (Norde & Trousdale 2025) and evaluative collocations of wannabe in English and languages wannabe was borrowed into (Norde et al. 2025). \nMuriel Norde ist Professorin für Skandinavistische Sprachwissenschaft am Nordeuropa-Institut der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. SUMMARY:Hendrik De Smet (KU Leuven): In language change\, analogy is like gravity: omnipresent\, weak\, and poorly understood
DESCRIPTION:In this paper I develop a particular view on analogy in language change. Although analogical reasoning underlies both creativity and language change\, its involvement comes in different flavours. Where creativity involves analogies that are highly unpredictable and extravagant\, language change mostly involves analogies that are predictable and unobtrusive. What is more\, analogy in language change often depends on contiguous factors that trigger innovative language use\, typically in the form of chain reactions. The reason is that analogy\, while omnipresent as a force that structures language\, is relatively weak. Arguably\, this weakness is a built-in feature of analogy reflective of ist primary nature as a conservative force in language. \nHendrik De Smet ist Associate Professor for English Linguistics am Department of Linguistics der Katholischen Universität Leuven. In seiner aktuellen Forschung befasst sich mit Sprachwandel in der Grammatik und verknüpft dabei\, die ihnen zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen mit aktuellen Ansichten über die synchrone Sprachstruktur\, -verarbeitung und -verwendung. Neben seiner Forschung hat er mehrere Korpora erstellt und der Forschungsgemeinschaft zur Verfügung gestellt. DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nThis talk focuses on the investigation of filler particles like “uh” or “uhm’”  in the speech of bilingual heritage speakers as part of these speakers‘ linguistic repertoire. Filler particles (FPs\, Belz 2023) show universal as well as language and speaker specific tendencies in their phonetic form (e.g.\, Clark & Fox Tree 2002\, Candea 2005) while the use of FPs has also been in interpreted as hesitations in speech planning (e.g.\, Betz et al. 2023) or as linguistic items with discourse organisation function (e.g.\, Staley & Jucker 2021). Research on heritage speakers (HSs) has reported an influence from the majority to the L1\, the heritage language in different linguistic domains while bidirectional influence is less often reported (Polinsky 2018\, Van Rijswijk et al. 2017). The analyses are based on data from the RUEG corpus (Wiese et al. 2021) and include semi-spontaneous narrations of both heritage and majority language use of bilingual HSs as well as monolingual data from the German\, Russian and English subcorpora (364 speakers). For acoustic analyses\, FPs were analysed in a smaller sample of these data (60 speakers) which was then auditorily analysed for segmental structure and acoustically analysed for their prosodic form and their vowel quality by measuring the fundamental frequency\, and the first and second formant of FP vowels using Praat (Boersma & Weenink 2024). The results reveal an influence of the dominant majority language on the segmental form of FPs while the vowel analysis shows a substantial overlap of FP vowels across languages with some phonetic variation. The prosodic form of FPs pattern similarly across languages and speaker groups. The analysis of filler particle frequency revealed higher use of FPs in contexts to which speakers are less used to\, including addessing the police and heritage language use. The comparison with discourse pragmatic markers showed similar use in relation to their discourse organisation function for all languages and speaker groups. \nMarlene Böttcher ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Skandinavisitk\, Frisistik und Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaften an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel. DESCRIPTION:Abstract of his talk: \nCompared with adults\, children are sharply limited when it comes to many intellectual activities (math\, science\, art) or cognitive abilities (memory\, attention\, social inference). Nonetheless\, they are strikingly more successful at learning language. The question of why is one of the oldest in cognitive science and among the most hotly debated. I present recent behavioral\, neurological\, and computational results based on millions of subjects that begin to fill in the missing parts of the puzzle\, suggesting a radically different picture of how language learning changes with age. \nJoshua Hartshorne ist Research Associate Professor of Communication Sciences & Disorders und leitet die 2024 gegründete Advanced Analytics & AI for Communication Science Group am Massachusetts General Hospital of Health Professions in Boston. DESCRIPTION:‘Asymmetric’ free relative clauses\, in which a DP undergoes pied-piping along with a fronted genitival/possessive wh-word\, exhibit a set of peculiar properties that set them apart from run- of-the-mill free relatives (cf. e.g. Müller 1999\, Vogel 2001 on German; Pollard & Sag 1994: 69\, McCawley 1998: 457 on English). As illustrated in (1)\, the verb internal to the free relative agrees in number with the whole DP consisting of (i) wessen ‘whose’ and (ii) a plural NP. In contrast\, the matrix verb agrees with the possessive/genitival wh-word and not with the nominal head. That is\, only wessen (and not wessen+NP) acts as the argument and subject referent of the matrix verb. This is also shown by the binding and resumption facts in the ‘real-life’ examples (2a-b). \n\n[Wessen Spielfiguren geschlagen werden] muss von vorne anfangen. I show that the construction poses a challenge to theoretical approaches to free relatives in which the fronted DP is represented in the matrix clause (including e.g. the Head analysis of Bresnan & Grimshaw 1978\, and more recent reprojection-based analyses such as Donati 2006). I then propose an alternative account in which the free relative is embedded under an empty D head (Groos & van Riemsdijk 1981) that is licensed/identified under Agree with a wh-operator (an instance of relativized probing\, Béjar 2003; Nevins 2007). In addition\, I will discuss the diachronic origins of asymmetric free relatives\, arguing that they developed from parenthetical conditional/concessive wh-clauses that gradually came to be integrated into the matrix clause through a series of reanalyses (possibly on the model of other wh-FRs\, cf. Coniglio & Paul 2019\, Fuß 2021). \nErik Fuß ist Professor für germanistische Linguistik insb. SUMMARY:think!lab creativity: Christian Nimtz (Bielefeld): „ Let’s get ‘creative’. Conceptual pluralism about creativity”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nConceptual pluralism about creativity holds that we use multiple\, systematically related concepts of creativity rather than a single one. I argue for pluralism from the philosophy of language. Both in our linguistic practice and in word semantics\, ‘creative’ shows systematic variability: (1) we need different definitional clauses for agents\, objects\, and processes; (2) we employ weakened uses\, including a current-state use for objects and a performance use for processes; and (3) as a gradable adjective\, ‘creative’ draws on different types of good-making properties\, yielding varying application conditions. I explain how the resulting pluralism solves some obvious and some not-so-obvious puzzles about creativity\, and our debate about it. \nChristian Nimtz holds the Chair of Theoretical Philosophy at Bielefeld University. His work is located at the intersection of the philosphy of language\, epistemology\, metaphysics\, and meta-philosophy. \nThe think!lab creativity is an initiative of the CRC 1646 “Linguistic Creativity in Communication”. Hosted by the philosophical sub-project B05 (PI Christian Nimtz and Julia Zakkou)\, it aims to provide a forum for the general discussion of creativity – a place to formulate idea\, try out theories\, discuss hunches and quite generally bring together different perspectives on creativity to broaden our theoretical and conceptual understanding.

DESCRIPTION:Wenn die alltägliche Kommunikation zur Herausforderung wird. Kreative Wege\, um verstanden zu werden \nWortfindungsstörungen stellen eines der häufigsten Symptome bei einer Aphasie dar. Unsere Studien zeigen\, wie Betroffene damit im Alltag kreativ umgehen. Mittels Gestik\, Umschreibungen oder durchs Erfinden von neuen Wörtern finden sie beeindruckende Wege\, sich auszudrücken. Das Beispiel hilft uns\, zu verstehen\, wie sprachliche Kreativität Brücken bauen kann und welche Potenziale in alternativen Kommunikationswegen liegen. \nDie Veranstaltung wird von Forschenden des Projekts C03 durchgeführt und wurde gemeinsam mit dem Projekt Ö des SFB 1646 entwickelt. Die Anmeldung erfolgt über das Portal der VHS. \nZur Veranstaltungsreihe: \nDie Forschenden des SFB 1646 untersuchen wie sprachliche Kreativität in der Alltagskommunikation eingesetzt wird\, um sich in einer ständig verändernden Welt zu orientieren. Mit ihrer Veranstaltungsreihe in der Volkshochschule Bielefeld\, die in diesem Semester in die zweite Runde geht\, möchten die Projekte wiederum in direkten Austausch mit allen treten\, die sich für den kreativen Umgang mit Sprache interessieren. Neben kurzen Impulsen aus der Forschung\, Fragerunden und offenen Diskussionen wird es auch verschiedene Möglichkeiten zum Mitforschen geben. SUMMARY:Creative Discourse. Beyond Discourse Expectations and Implicit Meaning
DESCRIPTION:The workshop is a collaboration between two projects of the Bielefeld Collaborative Research Center 1646 „Linguistic Creativity in Communication“ and deals with the phenomenon of semantic or pragmatic enrichment\, that is\, the ways in which the meaning of an utterance exceeds its literal content. \nIn Project B01\, Coercion as a creative mechanism in compositional interpretation\, enrichment is investigated for the phenomenon of complement coercion. Important questions in B01 concern the conditions under which enrichment occurs and whether enrichment is semantic or pragmatic in nature. \nProject B03\, Indirectness in discourse: Interrogatives\, implicit meaning and incongruence\, explores pragmatic enrichment in indirect speech acts and answer avoidance in political interviews\, for instance\, the question of how indirect replies are used to convey implicit meaning. \nIn both projects\, creativity is linked to pragmatic interpretation: Listeners use context\, knowledge of discursive strategies and expectations in order to reconstruct non-obvious meaning.
